Developmental Editing

Upon the completion of obtaining my MFA from Antioch University - LA, I continued my studies in the area of Developmental Editing through UCLA. This course, however, wasn't my first experience in this area. While I was studying at Antioch University, I had the privilege of working for two years on their Literary Journal, Lunch Ticket and being the Lead Editors for both their Flash Fiction and Blog submissions. Each year I would read over 500 submissions with my team and critiqued them. Some of the critiques were fairly straight-forward: "This story is not ready for publication." But, many submissions required us to dig deeper with conversations on craft, writing style, and appropriateness for our publication. Both of these types of critiques is where developmental editing can be of great benefit to the writer.

Before submitting to a publication, agent, or publishing house, it is essential to have professional feedback. Every writer becomes blind to what they have written, and often don't see how the reader is interpreting their sentence structure or story. A developmental editor gives you not only feedback on the entire manuscript; they can also conduct a line edit to help you further refine your story. Without this feedback, you run the risk of your short story, essay, or novel being quickly rejected. While there are no guarantees that using a developmental editor will turn you into a New York Times Best Seller, it will show to whomever you are submitting your work that you take your writing seriously—and so should they.

For more information on my services, please click HERE or on the red button to your right. I am always happy to provide you with some quick feedback at no charge, but to dig deep will require a commitment on both of our parts. As the writer, you will commit to allowing for an open and honest conversation about your work. As the developmental editor, I will commit to providing you with my professional feedback in a positive and encouraging manner.

Who benefits from the services of a Developmental Editor?

  • Professional writers and novelists who are readying their work for submission.
  • Students who wish to have their college admission essay, or final manuscripts refined before submission.
  • Amateur writers who are looking for feedback to improve their writing.
